Teaching Philosophy

Tollefson Music believes that a musical education needs to be skill-based, fun and rewarding for the student to learn best. A student is most receptive to learning new musical skills and ideas when they look forward to practicing between lessons, and the lessons themselves. The moment when the fun and curiosity disappear, it becomes nearly impossible for the student to progress. Tollefson Music understands that every student is different, and prides itself on finding what motivates each individual student. The concept of fun for young children and adults is different; what is fun for a child evolves into satisfaction and reward as the student matures.

A musical education is vital to a child’s development since it cultivates self-discipline, a high self-worth, and a positive work-ethic. The student realizes early on that consistent practice allows them to play pieces that were once too difficult. This realization fosters a high self-esteem which helps them excel in other academic and personal pursuits. More importantly, it is rewarding to play for yourself or for others.

Since Tollefson Music understands that every student is motivated and learns differently, we must be flexible in tailoring a unique lesson plan to fit each student. Elements like rhythmic, aural, and technical skills are emphasized for every student so they are able to accomplish their goals. It is also important for the student to understand more than just the ink on the page; we dive into the theory and history to fully understand and appreciate a piece of music. Different genres or styles like classical, folk, jazz, blues, or rock are important to explore since they each contribute something unique to the world of music. This comprehensive approach allows each student to develop into a versatile musician.
