Recitals offer an important experience to young musicians, and Tollefson Music is proud to offer two recitals every year. While recitals are not mandatory, we gently encourage our students to participate when they are ready to share their music with others. Our recitals are hosted in a casual, yet professional setting allowing each musician to feel comfortable and excited to perform. A wide range of music is preformed including classical, blues, pop, and rock. When the performer enjoys his or her recital piece, the audience hears that excitement making the performance unique and rewarding.
Recitals also offer a tangible measurement of a student’s progress. It can be hard to measure progress on a daily basis sitting in the practice room alone. Instead when we compare recitals to recitals, we see incredible progress. Children notice this progress and are proud of their hard practice.
Music has also brought people together for centuries, and our recitals are no exception. After every recital, we get many requests from eager students wanting to learn a new piece they heard someone else play. This kind of internal motivation results in a student’s progress every week.
An often overlooked value of the recital is the “public-speaking” component. It can be extremely difficult to get up and preform in front of your peers. Learning how to be relaxed and play your best in public is a learned skill, just like riding a bike. The more practice someone has playing in front of others, the better is gets over time. No matter what field of work someone wants to peruse, there will always be a public speaking component to the job. This skill will carry over into other academic and career pursuits.
