Policies and Procedures

Private Lessons:
Every student takes a weekly lesson on a specifically reserved day and time. Consistency is vital when learning any new skill, and music is no exception. Students learn best with regular guidance the weekly lessons offer. A week between lessons gives the student the ideal amount of time to practice skills learned during lessons.

Often 30 minute lessons are recommended, but please confirm this after your evaluation to find out is best for your child. We have found that 30 minutes is ideal, even for our older students. It is possible to accomplish more work in a longer lesson, but after 30 minutes even adults tend to lose focus. It is ideal to leave the student wanting more; this way they are the most receptive to learning more for their next lesson.

September-May
• Tollefson Music understands that it can be hard to predict future schedules, considering many of our students participate in sports and other school clubs. The commitment from each student is only for a month in advance. Payment for the month is due in full at the start of each month.
• Please take a look at the tuition fees to see the cost of each lesson(s). This amount will be multiplied by four or five, depending on the number of days that month. This is the amount due by the first lesson of each month.
• Every student has a reserved time on a specific day. Your reserved time slot is for you; we are not able to schedule another regular student in your time slot. You are therefore financially obligated to pay for your reserved time slot, even if a conflict exists. We do not offer a credit or a prorated fee for missed classes for any reason, such as illness or if you are out of town. Please take a look at the 2018-2019 dates music lessons will be offered for the school year.

Summer Session (June 18th– August 1st)
• Consistent instruction always benefits the student most, so Tollefson Music is happy to offer instruction over the summer. Summer is also a great time to continue since children aren’t weighed down by school and homework.
• The summer session is offered as one package; this is a change from September-May. Please check the calendar to see when lessons are offered over the summer, as well as the tuition for the summer session.
• Payment for the summer session is due in full by the first scheduled lesson.

Attendance/Make-Up Policy:
While make-up lessons are not guaranteed, we will try our best to find a make-up lesson for each student. We understand that consistency is vital for steady progress. The only way to guarantee a lesson each week is to attend the regularly scheduled lesson. If a conflict does arise, please remember:
• If you know that you will not be able to make a lesson, please notify us. We will use this time to offer a make-up lesson for another student.
• Early notice gives you the highest chance for a make-up lesson. Notice of two weeks or more is best.
• Make-up lessons will be scheduled two weeks before or after the missed lesson.
• In the rare event that an instructor cancels a normal lesson time, a make-up will be offered. If a make-up is not available, a credit will be applied towards next month’s fee.

Inclement Weather Policy:
Tollefson Music operates separately from public and private schools, so we do not necessarily close when other schools do. In the event of a closure, a make-up lesson will be offered, but we are unable to apply a credit. A notification will be sent out via email in the event of a closure.
